A BIT OF HISTORY
The main building was constructed by the WPA in 1940 and was used as an elementary school until 1984. SVCC was incorporated in 1985 to promote community activities for the youth and seniors of the Colfax Area. In 1989, the old Colfax Elementary School building was purchased as the site for the Community Center. The Carl Bianhini estate bequeathed a substantial amount of money, which allowed this purchase, and continues to support programs for all ages of citizens in the Colfax area.
It sits on 2.5 acres adjacent to downtown Colfax and houses classrooms, a gym, a ball field, commercial kitchen, and parking facilities.
SVC is an independent membership based organization, which is overseen by a membership elected Board of Directors. Board members do not receive any compensation.
SVC does not receive any City, County, or State funding. The bills are paid with the income received from room rentals, memberships and donations, and grants. The Board employs a part-time Office/Facility Manager who works 14 hours per week.
The Sierra Vista Community Center is located in downtown Colfax, California and serves the foothills of Placer and Nevada Counties. Sierra Vista Center, Inc. is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation that is home to community service programs, activities, and classes for all age groups in the Colfax area. Sierra Vista sponsors activities and rents facilities, which includes meeting space, a gymnasium, commercial kitchen, and ball field.
The majority of area non-profits and service clubs use the facility for fundraising and community events. These groups include the Colfax Green Machine and their annual Crab Feed, the Colfax Lion’s Club and their annual free Community Thanksgiving Dinner, Soroptimists of Colfax and their annual Soup Kitchen, and the Colfax Garden Club, just to name few. Our commercial kitchen is also used by area caterers and small businesspeople.
